Staying i Piraeus for 1.5 days, what should we do

by jerseyhiker »

We will spend 4-5 hrs 1st day in Piraeus.  Next day, Hydra is a likely one day trip; but ferry schedule  not yet posted.  It may take 1 hr or 2 hrs each way, which would leave us 3 or 4 hours in Hydra, so that we may meet our boat in Piraeus at 5 pm.  Is there a better choice for a 1-day sojourn?  Thank you.

I assume you'll have time in Athens elsewhere in your trip, or you've been before?  If not, I really wouldn't miss at least the Parthenon.  Other than that, Hydra is a good call.  If you end up with an afternoon in Piraeus, be sure to check out the excellent archaeological museum.

Hello,

So how was your trip to Greece?

I thought I'd leave some tips for anyone who stumbles on this post like I did today.

While in Piraeus, the port of Athens, you could:

Visit the Walls of Themistocles. They are also known as Long Walls. They were built in Piraeus in the 5th century B.C. to provide Athens with secure protection from its enemies. Today, you can see the ruins of the Long Walls in Peiraiki district and admire this ancient infrastructure that is incorporated in the daily life of Piraeus.

The perfect spot to drink your coffee, eat or wander around admiring the luxury yachts is, of course, Marina Zeas. This marina is the most elegant and high-prestige marina in Athens

The Municipal Theatre is one of the most significant opera buildings in Greece and in Europe, and it complements the cultural and artistic scene of the greater Athens area.

You might also want to check out the Maritime Museum and the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus.

Regarding the day trips from Athens, you might consider the following:

  • Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon
  • A day trip to Delphi
  • Greek island trips to Hydra, Poros and Aegina
  • Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nafplio
  • Corinth and Olympia
  • Meteora

If you need any more tips don't hesitate to PM me :)
