Which Greek isle?

by Dana2 »

Want to take a trip to Greece - going back to Santorini - Oia - We have been to Mykonos -where else would you recommend - what other two islands would you recommend that is near by to visit? We want a place that's pretty and where we'll get a flavor of real Greek life.

Naxos would be a good choice, and it's on the main ferry line from Santorini to Athens.   It doesn't have a deep enough port for cruise ships, so it has a whole different vibe.  Don't get me wrong, it has plenty of tourists, but not the hordes found on Santorini and Mykonos.  It has one large ruin visible and a short walk from the port, and pretty white kastro, and an interior carpeted with olive groves.  It's quite a bit different from Santorini and Mykonos, much greener and much larger.  There are some archaeological sites, some nice beaches, and some little villages in the interior that aren't a tourist draw and thus are more typical.  You may want to rent a car for a day or two to explore.

Paros and Antiparos are very close to Naxos and worth checking out.  I haven't been to them, so can't comment.

My favorite Greek island is Rhodes.  It's reachable by night ferry from Santorini if your timing is right - it only goes a couple days a week.  It was a very comfotable ride and an easy way to get between islands.  Rhodes is not in the white and blue village family of islands.  It was an important launching site for the crusades and consequently has a fortress (and ruins of other fortresses) in addition to some of the more ancient ruins.  It has some beaches I assume are nice, as they were gorgeous from a distance.  There's a whitewashed village, Lindos, that's an easy bus ride from Rhodes town.  I rented a car for a day and explored the eastern coast - it would have taken at least another day to see the rest of the island.  I was there four days, and it definitely wasn't enough.

Personaly I strongly suggest Naxos on the simple base that I do not know how long for it will retain its unique character. All islands have change since tourism arrived and change day by day and of course Naxos is not the island it was say 10, let alone 30 years ago.... But it still has some unique features even though it is in a very popular year around daily ferry line Piraeus-Paros-Naxos-(Ios)-Santorini and v.v. and it is a popular island for tourists since donkeys years.... Tourism on Naxos has expend very much on the last few years and it will continue to grow a lot, so I think it worths to go and see Naxos as soon as possible.  It is not an unknown island, there is lots of information on Naxos online.... Feel free to research my username and Naxos on other travelers' forums too, I spent a summer season working there a few years ago and I have post about this destination here and there. FrommersGreece  forum had gone nearly dead, but there is a wealth of info on sites such as Tripadvisor, Fodors and the like....
Have a look here for inspiration too:

PS: Don't get me wrong, I have spend a season ditto on Paros and I love this island too, it has some similar features with Naxos and Antiparos is an added bonus. I am sure you will have a blast there too and I have been in Rhodes for a couple of weeks and loved it too. I just support the Naxos option for the reasons stated above
: )
Have a great trip and let me know in case you think I could answer some more specific questions....

I would go for the island of Paxos. I have been there several times and I just love it.  There is something very sedate about this place that you easily lose sense of time. City of Gaios is an interesting hybrid of Italian and Greek with beautiful waterside buildings and numerous tavernas and cafes.  You can rent a motor boat and explore and enjoy quite a number of isolated beaches where you can have an absolute privacy. Island is easily reachable from Corfu which is another place that is beautiful.

Very time consuming to combine with Santorini though SummerHaze.... Nowhere near it.
