Interisland Flights

by Captain Larry »

My experience is a little stale, but I recall from a dozen years ago that all interisland flights of Hawaii Airlines had to go through Honolulu (HNL). Even the short 20-minute flight from Maui to Hilo took a couple of hours because you had to fly to HNL, maybe even change planes, before flying from Honolulu to Hilo. Is that still the case? I may be needing to fly from Kauai to Maui and then from Maui to Hilo. Nothing I can do will change it, but for my peace of mind I'd just like to know what to plan for.

Been back home about three weeks so thought I'd do a little updating: All of our interisland flights were non-stop, and it was great. Plus, Hawaiin airlines now has reserved seats and the seats are more comfortable than I remember from before. Still Boeing 717 regional jets, but they are not bad. We flew into the islands on a flight from LAX to Honolulu. Our return was from Kona to SFO. Worked out very well. Except for one minor detail. We were on first class tickets and it was great between IAD and the West Coast. The over water flights were rather miserable.
