Need lodge/inn on Big Island: Volcano or Hilo area

by PattyP »

We are spending 6 days on the Big Island around Christmas.  I was hoping to spend one night at the Volcano House, then 2 nights at Kilauea Lodge, then 3 nights on the South Kohala Coast, at the Fairmont Orchid or something like that.  The Kilauea Lodge is already booked up the nights we need, so now I am looking for a suggestion for someplace to stay between Volcano National Park and the Fairmont Orchid.  I'd like it to be on the Hilo side so we can explore that side as we head to the north.  Any suggestions? We are 4, 2 adults and 2 kids, 17 and 20. Thanks!

Hi Patty,

No question: spend time in Volcano! The most exciting part of being on the island is seeing the lava at night. So exciting, you'll want to do that more than once. And there are some GORGEOUS little B&B's in Volcano that will really make your stay special (in fact, I much prefer it to Hilo, which is the rainiest city in the US and a bit dreary, I think). If you go to the Hawaii section of our site, you'll find our authors suggestions for lodgings (she lives on the Big Island and has picked some GREAT places). Have a wonderful trip. The Big Island is wonderful!

We stayed at 5thStOhana (5thstreetohana.com)  in February 2016 and were happy.  Two bedroom unit with one bath.  Both rooms had a king.  Not sure if the kids want to share.  It was nice because it had a kitchen and laundry.  It was at the end of a long trip and we had been at a hotel (the Orchid actually) for the first 6 nights.  Just outside of Volcano Village.  Not super fancy but very clean and stocked with shampoo, soaps, etc . . ..
