Car or Camper rental in Iceland?

by /bio/eattravelenjoy »

Hello! I will visit Iceland next summer hopefuly! Just started planning my trip and I have still not decided whether to do it with a rental car and acommodation, or with a campervan. I have read many reviews of pros and cons ob both options, but would like to know real opinions.

I will travel during summer, most probably end of July and only have 5 days. I am thinking to explore only the South, as I read that you need at least a full week to go all round the island.

Planning to visit the Blue Lagoon, Krysuvik, The Golden Circle, Solheimajokull, Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Jökulsárlón, Fjallsarlon and many incredible waterfalls.

Any recommendation and ideas are more than welcome!!

Hello there! It took me a long time to decide where to go for my next summer holidays but I'm now reading a lot before my trip to Iceland in June. I have been doing some research and I came across a campervan website that looks pretty convenient as they include all the insurances already, just like other cars companies out there. I booked a small camper for my solo trip that has everything I need. I love that bit of adventure when I travel and I don't mind camping at all. I read online that you could buy some groceries at the store and then cook, take a shower and more at a campsite so that's really good for finances lol.

I truly recommend renting a Camper as these vehicles are small, just like a car and you can bring more people if you like as there are a few models to pick. If you are worried about the insurance, this company I booked with, Campervan Reykjavik will include all of these with the price you pay, no need to pay anything extra so that's great news to me.

Hope you have a great trip!!

Hi!

That is really up to your budget and preferences.

During the summertime, accommodation in Iceland is very, very expensive. Prices skyrocket as it is the high season. So in that case, a campervan would be a better option, economically speaking.

If you like the flexibility those vehicles provide and you're all about adventure, then I'd rent a camper.

If you are those kinda people who like to get everything ready and done, extra comfort and budget is not a problem, the car + hotel is your option.

Thank you for the responses!

I have been doing some research and tried to budget a trip with rental car + accommodation and it comes totally out of my budget, so I decide to go for the camper option!

However, I have read in many webs that you cannot just park and sleep anywhere - I mean in a parking lot or the country side, of course I'm not planing to park in someone's garden :P

Do you know about this regulation? Is that true? Can you get fine for it?

In that case, if staying in campsites is a must, would you recommend buying the CampingCard? It will be my and my sister traveling

Thank you for all your help!!

Hello,

I visited Iceland a year ago and the best solution if you are travelling in high season is to get a camping card, it was what I did and it worked perfectly. Since campers do not have everything you may need to do daily (wash the dishes, take a shower, WC...) this is definitely what you will need.

Gas stations and resting areas are also lifesaving if you are on your way to visit something and unable to go to a campsite.

Plan your route checking where the campsites are (where you are going to stay overnight) and the hardest part will be ready! You can start planning freely once you have this sorted out.

Hi!

Nope, you cannot longer camp anywhere. The legislation changed back in 2015 I think...so now you need to park at designated areas, permitted areas or under the authorization of the landowner.

Here you can find more information about the camping law in Iceland

Regarding the CampingCard, it can be a good option depending on your plans and how many people are heading to Iceland with you. The card is 150€ and can only be used on certain campsites, not all of them. It is up to 4 people I think...2 adults, and 2 kids. So I recommend you to compare individual prices / the camping card. If you happen to be a party of 3 adults, you would need two Campingcards.

sometimes the card is a great option, sometimes it is not : )

I am surprised there are still good places to hike left. The anti climate change tribal camp was an enlightening experience for me: tribalclimatecamp.org I recommend you to see the initiative for yourself.

That's one of the main reasons I'm visiting Iceland, to enjoy the wild nature and hiking. If you are interested, I have already found two great hiking trails: https://www.iceland24blog.com/2017/03/20-hiking-trails-in-highlands.html
