Car rental insurance in Iceland?

by uday029 »

Hello All,

I will be in Iceland for 4 days in mid July and I am looking to rent a car to go around Iceland. I will probably book the cheapest deal so it will be a compact 2WD car. My trip will mainly be limited to sights on Highway 1 and some other standard detours along Highway 1. I am not planning to go off-road or drive on ice. Will I need to buy "Gravel Protection" and "Sand and Ash Protection"? I am not sure why they are required when I am already buying Liability coverage and Third Party Insurance. Gravel Protection and Ash protection are not offered if I rent a car through US websites such as Expedia or Priceline. Adding those insurances increase the rental cost by about 100 dollars. Are they really needed in summer if I stick to paved roads?

Thanks.

It's all about peace of mind in Iceland because it does have one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world, meaning if there is a small eruption, you could have ash damage to your car. And in many areas, if you go even slightly off the main road you'll encounter gravel and it if dings your car's paint job, you'll end up paying more than the insurance would ultimately cost to fix the damage. That being said: $100/day is a hefty charge, so you may want to take the risk and drive very, very carefully.

I would take out both  - I think the overall cost of the rental with the extra insurance is $100, not $100 per day. You can drive as carefully as you like but if you get caught in a sandstorm (rare but not unheard of) you will face a huge bill.

You need the insurance and it is worth it. You'd never know what will come your way. The thing is that Icelandic weather is quite unpredictable. It is better safe than sorry they say. For the most affordable cars you can get help from travel planners in Iceland. What they usually do is help out travelers though you still pay the same price so their services is free for travelers.

Driving in Iceland is quite tricky so it is highly advised that you should read their rules and regulations first before pumping that gas. They have speed limits, headlights all the time policy, they care about their animals' safety and all those stuff.
