**ICELAND** Car rental and any ideas for my travel plan?

by /bio/greensky »

Hello globetrotters! I will spend some days with my sis in Iceland at mid-April and we hesitate about the best car for that. We want to visit the main tourist spots through the Golden Circle, Would we need a 4x4 vehicle for this itinerary or a 2wd one would be enough? we do want to get a new brand car with 0 franchise! About our travel plan, any itinerary recommendation? thanks a lot for your help and time! :)

Hi! I'm curently planning a trip to Iceland but I will go for a motorhome just to avoid paying the hotels. I made some research on the internet and there are many roads that can be accessed with a 4x4 car only. However if you only driver on paved roads and for that you can use the Ring Road which goes all around Iceland, you can get a standard 2wd. This is what we are going to do. My rental company told me that with thr 2wd motorhome I am not allowed on F-roads because it could damage the vehcile etc. I can't recommend any car rental company though as the company I rent from has only motorhomes and smaller campers. Hope it helps a bit!

Hello!

I visited Iceland back in 2017 and by that time (first days of April) I was told that a 4x4 was not necessary but recommendable. We decided to take the advice and we went for a 4x4. We did not regret to have spent that money because despite the weather was good most of the time, we had a couple of days that we went through a storm when coming back to Reykjavik from the north. As the car was heavier, it was more balanced and steady which mad us feel safer.

I hope this is of help for you :)
