Is Iceland good for the Northern Lights?

by ziggy »

I've found an inexpensive fare on Icelandair to Paris and it has a stop-over that I could extend. I've always wanted to see the Northern Lights, so I was thinking of doing the stopover for a night or two in early December. Has anyone done this? Thanks for any advice.

Many people have done it, and yes, Iceland is a good place for the Northern Lights...although whether you will see a display depends a great deal on weather and clouds. A number of companies run night-time trips from Reykjavik out into the countryside to see them, although at times they are visible even in the city glow.

The bad thing is that sometimes they don't appear while you are there (happened to me); the good thing is that the tour companies will take you again if nothing happens on a day when they try, and will cancel when it's clear there will be no visibility. The largest (and one we used) is Reykjavik Expeditions http://re.is

Thanks PHeymont. Not sure what I'll do, quite honestly, but your response was very informative. Thanks!

Not sure if this is too late, but apparently, the Northern Lights have already started in many areas and they're unusually spectacular this year, according t to the evening news. So if there was ever a time to go, it's this year!

The cheapest and wonderful place to see the Northern Lights in Iceland. The Northern Lights are visible in this Nordic Island nation from the month of September to the end of April. Before two months I had gone to Iceland. Before travel, I booked a tour package from www.gotojoyiceland.is. You can book your tour package for Northern Lights through online from the same company.
