Stopover Advice

by sarahv »

My son wants to visit his girlfriend in Rotterdam.  Obviously he'll fly to Schiphol but the best fare is Icelandic Air.  He has a choice of 1 1/2 or 8 hour layover.  Would he be allowed to leave the airport to explore Reykjavik?

On the 1.5 hour layover, there's no practical way; the roundtrip, even in a taxi with no waiting, would eat up all but a few minutes of the time. On the 8-hour layover, there's certainly time for a quick visit, and no restrictions on leaving the airport.

In fact--Iceland encourages stopovers, and the airline will allow you as much as a 3-day stopover! Your son may be anxious to get to his girlfriend, but if he has time, adding 24 hours to the trip could give him an opportunity to see a bit more.

Agree with P.Heymont. Take the 8 hour layover, Iceland is great! And recently it's been warmer there than in Europe. In fact, if you could do a two or three day layover, even better. It's an extraordinary country with great food and sights. We just did a layover on the way to the UK and preferred our time in Iceland to the UK!!
