Traveling in Iceland with a motorhome

by /bio/lila_k. »

Hello! We are planning a road trip with a motorhome with my family but I've read that most of the roads are gravel and it is impossible to go with motorohme there. Gravel roads are the same as F-roads? Can I use motorohme on F-roads? If not I think we will loose a lot of Iceland because most of attractions are accessible only by hravel roads, is that correct?

Hello! I just booked a camper and they told me I can go on gravel roads, I guess it would be the same for motorhomes... I cannot go to F-roads though as we did not book a 4x4 camper, just a 2WD

As far as I know, F-roads are the ones crossing the Highlands, in the middle of the island. You can find gravel roads all over the country.

Hi! Thank you for answering me so quick! I see, I will need to check the roads first carefully. And what about the insurance? I found the company that offers me 0 isk self-risk fee but I don't know if everything is included in that? Like wheels and underside of the car?  Can you please tell me from your experience?

If they use the same rules as in other countries -I guess they do- the underside of the car is never covered by insurance, same with the roof. My rental company does not include the tyres on the insurance neither, so if you have a flat tire it's your own responsibility. I have hired with companies that offered a special insurance only for this, but could not find anyone like this in Iceland. Fingers crossed!!

Hi! I will probably just hire it from a prvate insurance company, just like an additional insurance. Do you know if GPS is needed? like, there would be netword for my wi-fi around the whole iceland or I should add that as extra too?

Hi!

Gravel roads and F-Roads are two different things. F roads are Mountain roads (fjall in icelandic means mountain eheh) and you can find those routes mainly within the highlands of Iceland. You must drive on these roads using a 4x4 vehicles 'case their quite tough and abrupt.

Now, gravel roads are basically everywhere. They're not paved and you can even find some sections of the Ring road that are gravel road. That is why having a gravel protection insurance is important. I hear visitors complaining about damages caused by gravels alllll the time.

I heard some companies now offer like a better coverage but with no excess, you might check those out too.
