For visitors from out of the country, I'd say that Agra, with the Taj Mahal, is likely the most popular weekend getaway from Delhi. It's an easy train ride between the two.

The Yamuna Expressway opened in 2012 which is a new superhighway (toll) connecting Noida (just south of Delhi) with Agra. This very modern, controlled access highway cuts driving time from 4+ hours to 100 minutes making a day trip to Agra by car to see the Taj Mahal somewhat practical. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamuna_Expressway

However I recommend staying in Agra at least overnight so you can visit the Taj Mahal when it first opens in the early morning (it opens at sunrise). You'll beat both the crowds and heat of the day.

Keep in mind that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. There is a security check (similar to airport security) to enter the grounds and there is a list of prohibited items: http://www.tajmahal.gov.in/do&nots.html

I also suggest Agra for foreign travelers. If you like adventure Rishikesh is very good option, Rishikesh is the place for Adventure Activities (White Water River Rafting, Cliff jumping and kayaking)
