14 day First Time Visit

by ddharrison11 »

Hello all...starting early..we are planning a trip for September 2014.  Would like suggestions as to flying into to Dublin and leaving from Shannon or visa versa. We plan on renting a car to self tour with stays in mostly B & B's (but Hotel options open).  Towns and B&B suggestions welcome.  Our interests are in the sites and local pubs at a leisurely pace exploring the southern half of Ireland.

ddharrison11,

Perfect time to plan as we go into low season and lots of time to help!

As for flying into one and out of the other, there are several factors to take into consideration.  I like first-timers to go into Shannon as it is easier to get acquainted with driving from Shannon rather than driving through Dublin traffic.  After that it's a matter of price.  If it's cheaper to fly into Dublin and out of Shannon than vice-versa than that takes priority -- and just know that the only reason prices would be substantially different is due to the plane being full for particular flights.  The Dublin/Shannon flights start out the same and go up when particular dates/flights fill up.

B&B rates were just released and they went down very slightly from 2013 rates which was a nice surprise -- we actually anticipated a slight increase as tourism has increased quite a bit this year.

You are asking for town and B&B suggestions ... but what is it you want to see and do?  Have you read any tour books on Ireland? We typically ask folks to give a list of "must see" and "like to see" items and then we help turn that into a meaningful itinerary... otherwise blindly asking for folks to tell you what you should see and do turns into more of a mess.  Looking back on history folks get overwhelmed and then try to fit too much in based on what others say rather than what it is they decide they want to see an do.

Do you have a beginning itinerary to start?  If not I typically start with a basic Southern Route or Northern Route and then go from there.  http://www.enchantingireland.com/Self-Drive-Vacations/Ireland-Sample-Itineraries.aspx

Thank you for the information...I have ordered Back Roads Ireland (Eyewitness) and Rough Guide to Ireland so hopefully I can pin down some details.  I do know that we will travel the Southern Route.  Any suggestions on when to purchase plane fare?  6 months out or more...?  We will be traveling from Phoenix, Az and found that we have a sister city with Ennis so that will probably be a stop.

Welove the Eyewitness Guides -- great choice!

Airfare is tough... but we typically see prices fall into place around 6 months to 3 months prior to departure.  As the plane fills up we find the fares rise, hence 3-months before is about that time.  That doesn't mean you won't find a good deal well before that... so keep an eye.
