first trip to Ireland and Scotland and need help with itinerary!

by /bio/enchantingireland »

flannery02,

First question is ... how long are you in Ireland before heading to Scotland?  You have Day #5 with ? but is that the end of the trip and on to Dublin?

The logical route would be up to Dublin to get over to Scotland since you're in Cork ... and the bigger question is what do YOU want to see and do?  Waterford?  Kilkenny?  You say more outdoor things so Wicklow National Park before going to Dublin head to Scotland.

You do have to return the car in Ireland and get a new one in Scotland I'm afraid... and I wouldn't take a day trip to London.  It's 4 hours by train, minimum ... so you're spending 8 hours in transport?  If you had more time in Scotland then you could drive down ... and fly home but my experience has been that splitting Ireland/Scotland, folks just don't give either the time they deserve.

We are planning a trip to Ireland and Scotland next August- yes I know that its the high season but have tickets for Royal Military Tattoo. We are coming from the US and and am thinking of flying into Shannon and departing from Edinburgh. I have a little picked out so far but then am stuck on how long I should plan in each area. We are looking to have 10-14 days including flights. This is what I have planned so far...

Day 1: fly into Shannon and rent a car and make our way to Doolin. Sight see some and stay in the area for the night.

Day 2: Do more sighseeing in the area and make our way to Killarney using the ferry in Killmer to Tarbert. Stay in the area for 2 days.

Day 3: Sightsee more in the area including Dingle

Day 4: make way to kiss the Blarney then?

Day 5: ?

After that I am at a loss. I don't know wahich direction to go.My husband and my ancestors are from the Tipperary/Laois are so would like to visit but not set in stone. I plan on only spending one night in Dublin and then head up to Giant's Causeway and spending a night there before we head to Belfast and then ferry across to Scotland.

Do I need to turn in the rental car in Ireland then rent another in Scotland? Also would like to do a day trip by train to London. We plan on flying out of Edinburgh 2 days after our tickets for the Military Tattoo so will have a full day of sightseeing in Edinburgh. Not really museum type more outdoor things we are looking for but open to any suggestions.

Thanks!!

I would like to visit Belfast and Gaints Causeway also and was thinking about taking a ferry to Scotland from there. I was thinking 4-5 days in Scotland and spending the majority in Ireland. I haven't looked into what there is to do in Waterford except for the glass blowing and was also thinking about Kilkenny. I am really at a loss once we are done with the Blarney Stone except I know the Northern part. Not really to big on spending alot of time in Dublin- looks more like a big city feel to me. All input is greatly appreciated!!

How long are you in Ireland for?  Going south and then up to Belfast is going to be quite a lot of driving so it all depends on the amount of time you're in Ireland.  Plus dropping a car in Belfast will result in a "drop fee" for the car -- meaning it's more expensive than Dublin or Shannon.
