looking for car service/driver, not a tour guide

by /bio/califcajin »

Hi,
I am planning a trip to Ireland this fall and am looking into hiring a car/driver instead of doing trains and busses. I am a seasoned traveler and already have my base cities picked out (Dublin, Galway, Cork and Waterford or Kilkenny) and will do day trips and/or bus tours from those cities.  Upon investigation, it is very time consuming getting from Galway to Cork- the train basically goes back to Dublin first and the bus routing is not much better- each of these was 4-5 hours.  I do NOT want to rent a car, but would like to hire a car service to get from Galway to Cork, Cork to Waterford/Kilkenny and from there back to Dublin.  I have already contacted Gene at glengarriff cabs (found on TripAdvisor) and he is unavailable. I am not looking for a tour guide, just a car and driver.
If anyone has people/transportation companies used in the past I would appreciate suggestions.
Thank you.

Have you looked at Viator? They do cars and drivers there and you may be able to find someone. Or contact your hotel. Someone there might be able to help. Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestion.  On the Viator website they only quote airport to city transfers, not city to city. However I have sent an email inquiry to ask if they do city to city.

I did receive a response from Viator, and it was basically a canned response: so I am still looking

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Cork transportation, through Viator.

Viator specializes in selling independent tours, events and attractions in over 400 destinations worldwide. We do not specialize in accommodation, air travel, rail or all-inclusive packages.

To obtain information on these products, we suggest you visit an online accommodation or air travel booking site, a local tourist bureau or consult with your local licensed travel agency.

We regret we cannot help you further at this time but look forward to helping you with your tour, event and attractions bookings in the future.

Kindest regards,
Viator Customer Service

Viator does have a special section for private guides, though. It may be called something other than Viator. You might try contacting some of the B&B's or hotels that you're staying in and see if any of them can offer suggestions. Often they'll know of good local drivers and you can pick up different guides in each place. That might be more interesting than having one guide for the entire trip and might end up being more cost effective as you won't have to pay the lodging expenses for the guide that way.

I did look at all the sections, but again, I do not want a 'guide', just someone to drive us from Galway to Cork.  I did get an estimate from one of the taxi services and it was over 300.  When I questioned why so high, was told that the driver would have to go back to Galway after dropping us in Cork.   Timewise for the trip it is still better than the train or bus, so I am still considering it, but also still looking for other options.  We are staying at the Radisson in Galway so, yes, I will reach out to them for suggestions.  But I assume that their suggestions may be more expensive that what I could find on my own, but who knows...

Not necessarily. Someone may have a brother wanting to pick up extra cash. Bettter yet: are you staying at a B&B in Cork? My guess is they'd have better suggestions than the receptionist at a Radisson in Galway, who may not be Irish (you get a lot of non-locals in the chain hotel jobs).

We are staying at The River Lee hotel in Cork.  Do you think I should contact them and ask?

Yes, definitely ask them. I used that methor recently in India (getting transport from hotel to hotel). It worked really well and it was MUCH less expensive that getting one car and driver for the whole trip would have been. Remember: Ireland is relatively small.
