One week in Dublin area with family of 6

by mother-of-chaos »

Hello all - I am looking for information on planning a trip for my family (4 kids ages 18, 15, 13, 9) for one week in March. We will be there over St. Patrick's day which I know isn't a big holiday, but my kids think it's fun. Looking for suggestions on which areas to stay in, what activities you really liked, and any day trips out of the city with no car. We are seasoned travelers and do not like agenda-based trips, but I am starting the planning for this one very late by my standards and would love some feedback. Thank you!

Mother-of-chaos,

St. Patrick's Day is a HUGE deal in Dublin -- you're looking a lots of festivities around that time so the kids will be very occupied during that time.

I would definitely suggest the hop-on/hop-off bus tour throughout the city right away so they can all pick and choose what it is they want to see over the next few days and then plan your week accordingly.

Try http://www.railtoursireland.com/ for day trips out of the city and they now have overnight stays as well so that might be a nice diversion.

As for where to stay, you need to book that immediately due to the holiday.  That books up well in advance, leaving only 5-star hotels as the date gets closer.  I prefer Merrion Square area, staying away from the Temple Bar for sleeping ... if you stay there, YOU WON'T SLEEP :)

Thank you Enchanting! I went ahead and booked a hotel (Buswells) which seems to be in a decent area. I will look at the other suggestions you gave me as well. I appreciate your help!

We enjoyed the guided tour at the Kilmainham Gaol The Hop On Hop off  stops there If you go Get there early At least before 11am As there are long lines and they only let 45 people in per quide The gaol is empty but has a fascinating history
