Oh no! I think the forum accidentally deleted the entire A Wine Geek thread!

by mushroom »

I was answering AWG, and hit the "post" button, and after I did and my response was posted to the thread,  I noticed I had mistakenly repeated a couple of sentences twice.  So I copied the post and then deleted it -- and it appears to have deleted the whole thread!!!

I'll see if I can get to the forum managers to salvage it.  In the meantime, here is my response to AWG

I try to use Emirates every single time I fly to the US, partly because I think their service is so good but mainly because their westward bound flight out of Milan doesn't depart until mid-afternoon, which means I don't need to spend the night in Milan (or get up at the crack of dawn anywhere).  Equally nice for me is that the Emirares eastward bound flight to Milan leaves JFK around 10pm, and arrives in Milan around noon.  I head for a hotel after arriving on an eastbound transatlantic flight in Europe, so the noon arrival means my hotel room is likely to be ready immediately.

I wouldn't mind seeing Albany again. I only went once a zillion years ago on a political protest, leaving within a few hours, and that was before the huge Rockefeller project was complete.  I hear the city is underrated and of course the surrounds are beautiful. Stopping in Albany might be a way to break up a long journey between Burlington and NYC. I'm trying to lean on train travel or very short car jaunts because I suspect my travel dates will be early April, which I've heard can still be fairly stormy and icy in that part of the world. Fortunately, I can "pad" extra time between destinations so I'm can wait out a storm if need be.

This is ridiculous. How is that even possible that someone could delete the whole discussion?

mushroom, I'm trying to think of all the links that you kindly shared over the past 2 weeks that I had not yet saved. Geesh Frommer's :-(

Central NY Weather is unpredictable in early April. Big storms are rare that time of year, but ice or snow are very possible on any given day.  The train strategy is wise, and so very European of you :-)

How do you delete a post?  I don't get a delete button anymore. (nor an edit button) Just reply or subscibe.

I was going to try to delete a thread just for "fun". So I replied to the Abruzzo thread/promo for a business with intent of re-enacting your delete process, but I can't delete anything.

Why is there no longer an option to edit or delete one's own post?

I was able to find at least the first page of the thread by doing a google search for "Frommer's Italy Forum A Wine Greek" (note I repeated the misspelling) and could access a cached version

https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:U4X4CiYcXgEJ:https://www.frommers.com/forums/italy-malta/topics/hey-what-happened-to-a-wine-greek-s-thread+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=it&client=safari

I'll see if I can think of a way to get cached versions of the subsequent pages.

And if that doesn't work for you, I never clean out my persional browser cache, and it has a pretty good historical memory.  I think these were the two most important links for Padova

https://www.monicacesarato.com/blog/2018/06/03/why-you-should-visit-padua-what-to-do-see/

http://www.mostrarivoluzionegalileo.it/itinerari-rivoluzione-galileo-padova/

The other important link was to language lessons with Coffee Break Italian

https://radiolingua.com/tag/cbi-season-1/?order=asc

Most everything else was a tangential discussion of various pastas and their history.  We also talked about reading Rappacini's Daughter (and maybe A Room with a View?).  If you can think of anything else, I can probably find the missing link.  Also, Frommer's moderators have gotten in touch with me to see if they can locate the thread, so we'll see what happens.

thanks mushroom!

I just did an experiment.  Started a new thread in Belarus. (first ever!)

Then replied to it.  There was an option to delete and it deleted the entire thread, not an individual post.  So, I guess the option is there only for whomever started the thread (you started "my" what happened to the AWG thread), and it deletes the whole conversation.

The tech-heads at Frommer's should look at this.  There should be an option to delete or edit a post and not just one to delete the whole conversation.

yes, that theory about the glitch makes sense.  I'll copy over what you posted and pass it along to the people who responded to my initial complaint about the thread disappearing.  They have indicated they can probably restore the thread that got deleted,, but don't know what might be holding that up.

In the meantime, here the cached version of what appears to be page 2 or 3 of the missing thread
