Train Tickets: Buy now or When We get to Italy?

by Judith »

We fly into Milan in the morining (late Sept.) and are going to Varenna on the train.  Stay in Varenna a few days and than meet up with our group in Stresa.  Should we buy our tickets before we leave the U.S. or after we arrive in Milan?  I know we should buy a round trip ticket for Milan to Varenna.

You can't buy tickets in advance for that route even if you want to.  It's a regional train, and those tickets are not available online.

I think Trenitalia now allows advance online ticket purchase for Regionale trains -- but perhaps only for people in Italy.  But one of the downsides of buying Regionale tickets in advance online is that they are for fixed times, validated in advance, so you don't have any flexibility. If you buy them in advance at the station, you can use them anytime you want. Just remember that you MUST validate the ticket JUST BEFORE you board the train.

However, there is no real need to buy tickets to and from Varenna or Stresa because the trains are rarely crowded,  unless you are using traveling on weekends during commute hours when the weather is beautiful -- i.e., Friday evening or first thing Saturday morning, or after lunch on Sundays -- plenty of room on the trains.

I think this statement should include "in advance" - otherwise it sounds like you are saying that no tickets are needed at all!

Yes, it is possible to buy the Regionale tickets in advance (although, as Mushroom points out, it is likely a bad strategy!).

I haven't checked on the Trenitalia site for Regionale purchases, but they can be bought from outside Italy through trainline.eu, which comes with a recommendation from Mark Smith (Man in Seat61) and from me (I've used them for Italian, French, German, and Austria tickets in the past couple of years).

It's an easy site to use, and their app keeps tickets organized and ready to flash when the conductor comes with his scanner.
