Just wanted to recommend the latest Frugal Travel column, because it really makes Kansas and the surrounding states sound fascinating. You don't think of these "corn-fed" places as being of that much interest culturally, but after reading that article, I want to go.
Does anyone have a favorite Kansas place I should use as a base?
You might think about starting in the east (Leavenworth or Kansas City) and driving across the state on US 24/40. I remember doing that with my family in the middle 50s, and then again on my own in the late 60s. The changes along the way, the small towns and broad expanses, were fascinating both times.
And if it still exists: Gus's A&G diner on the main street in Salina had the best chicken-fried steak ever in 1969.
