STAY AWAY FROM NEW ORLEANS!

by sadinnola »

I am so sad that this iconic city has turned so foul! There is corruption and crime evrywhere & no one is doing anything about it. Saw someone get pickpocketed right in front of a cop & all he did was give the guy a business card and told him to go to the police department & file a report! The kid that took his wallet was looking right at the cop when he did it & didn't even bother to run away! Couldn't be more disgusted with this kind of laziness. I hope the Mayor is paying attention to these crimes. When he is done stuffing money in his pocket, maybe he can do something about it!

Sadinnola,

I don't know if you check back to see if anyone reples to your message (since it's your only post), but it makes me sad everywhere to think that a single incident you witnessed would make you think no one should ever go there again.

Sadly, crime occurs in every city--more frequently in some, to be sure--and corruption is a constant issue in government. Were we to apply the standard you've set to everywhere in the world, no one would travel anywhere, and so much would be lost!

I was in New Orleans in the 90's when the crime rate was MUCH worse, & we were fine.  Yes, New Orleans can be dangerous.  Read your guidebook & follow it.  The govt there has always been corrupt, famously so.  The slight underbelly of seediness is part of its charm.  Just be aware that they can spot tourists, so keep your wits about you & your money held safely.  Honestly, I can't wait to go back.

I am a native and resident of New Orleans, and it's unfortunate you witnessed that; but the others are right. Every major city has its share of crime problems and corruption.

If someone uses common sense- staying in lit, well populated areas, not carrying anything in the open that would be tempting to steal, then there should not be any problems.

One thing though for travelers to be aware of right now. The police department is short handed. This has caused concern among French Quarter residents and businesses. From my experience and in talking to others in the city, the police respond to emergencies quickly; but for incidents like a car accident with no injuries, it may take several hours for the police to see you to write a report.

I don't think NO has changed much over the last couple of centuries.  We had a great time there, but we were always aware of what was going on around us.  Sort of like in most big cities we've visited.

While I am somewhat sympathetic with sadinnola's distasteful experience, I am more offended by the attitude that it somehow gives him or her the right to insist that everyone should boycott the city. But that is a recurrent theme of posts on most travel forums. The attitude seems to be, "I had a bad experience so nobody should go there or do that", wherever or whatever it is. Exercise caution, to be sure, but go where you want to go when you want to go there. It's been many years since I was in New Orleans, but I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. I don't need to go back, but i will if I want to.
