Where to stay in Mexico City on a serious budget?

by Ramonlv »

Hi guys,

I've written an article on cheap hotels in Mexico City and it lists a few good options that I know of. I'm really looking for hotels that are under $30US per night, but are decent. Can anyone recommend some good ones they have stayed at?

Cheers

IMHO your article should be even more forthcoming about just where those recommended hotels of yours are situated. At least two of them are in areas of El DF that my chilango in-laws and other compadres avoid, particularly after dark. I have no issue going to those colonias myself but I wouldn't recommend them for first timers to Mexico City or inexperienced travelers.

I think I would have to agree with you in hindsight. It might be slightly irresponsible of me to suggest the Hotel Panorama near Tepito. The area at night is regarded as dangerous but I still have friends who love to check the markets there in the day because it's so cheap... so mixed feelings. But as an outsider coming in blind, perhaps I should give more warning. Thanks for your input though.

The Tepitito tianguis (traditional street market) is fun. But it is critical to be aware of your surroundings, don't take anything of value that you can't afford to lose, and get out of the Colonia Morelos (the neighborhood where Tepitito is located) before nightfall. Regretfully Colonia Morelos is not a good area of Mexico City and you absolutely do not want to get lost in the vecindades (tenements/slums) that populate this neighborhood. Both gringos and chilangos that wander off on the wrong street here are like chum in shark infested waters.

If you're not travelig with children you should consider staying at a hostel. The hostel quality does vary and the historic center of mexico city (centro historico) offers a fantastic range of hostels that have very comfortable settings.

Look into:

Downtown Beds

Hostal Regina

Lots of options for you and don't be afraid of hostels they are awesome places to meet up with like minded people.

Cheers.

Just stayed at a charming B&B in Mexico City called Patio 77, though its bathless rooms are closer to $80 a night. We loved it though. Great hosts, folk art everywhere, eco-showers (ie solar heated). Lots of fun.
