And we have limited vacation time. Should we take them up on it? We'd love to see them, but I wonder if there's enough to see and do in that area to make a visit worthwhile (it does help that they have a house, which will cut down on our expenses).
We'd likely be there in July. I guess a few days decompressing wouldn't be bad :)
Hi! I am a 40 year resident of Michigan and frequently visit Traverse City. Here are a few destination/activity ideas.
The first two weeks in July they have a National Cherry Festival. There is a lot of community activities during this time. I believe the Blue Angels have a show during the festival as well.
Cherries and Blueberries will be in season and you could visit a U-Pick farm. Or a roadside stand if you just want the fruit without the expierence.
There are numberous outdoorsy things to do in the area - kayaking, hiking, fishing, etc. Check out the Boardman River that goes through downtown for kayaking.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is about 30 minutes to the west in Empire. There is a beautiful beautiful beach on Lake Michigan.
Downtown Traverse City has several nice restauants and a few breweries
There are a few lighthouses in the area that make a nice destination and photo op.
There is a sailboat and catamaran outfitter in the area that takes you out in the bay.
There are several wineries that host tours and wine tasting. The penninsulas in the area are the ideal climate for growing fruits like cherries and grapes. A drive up the pennisula to see the vast orchards and bay is a must!
