Impossible to see Myanmar now?

by alice in travel land »

As I posted earlier, I'm planning an Asia trip and am not quite sure where to go. Myanmar (Burma) always seemed like it would be a cool place to see, but I've read that it's being overwhelmed by tourists right now and that it's hard to get hotel rooms. Is that so? Are there any tour operators or travel agents that specialize in Myanmar that I should use?

My brother went about three months ago with a company called Intrepid Travel and he said it was an exceptional experience. You may want to look at their tours.

There are a number of travel agents in Myanmar that can put a tour together for you.  However they're as overwhelmed by the recent numbers of travelers as many of the hotels.  A company like Intrepid might be the way or you can book things yourself like I did several months ago.  I contacted hotels, many were full, but I did manage to find good ones for a stay of 3 weeks booked several months in advance.  The more time ahead you plan the better the possibilties for finding what you want, like anywhere.  Our accommodation in Yangon made arrangements for travel inside the country for us and we paid them for it all on arrival.

I did find that once we were in the country it wasn't difficult to find hotel rooms.  Many newer places aren't yet in the guidebooks so haven't been booked up.  I was unhappy with the place we'd booked in Bagan and was able to move to a nice and less expensive place with a day's notice.  And we found a hotel with rooms available in Kalaw for a last minute trip from Inle Lake.

Santa Maria is a popular agency there but they're so busy apparently they don't readily answer emails.  I tried one more then proceeded to do it myself.  It's perfectly possible if you have the time.  It's a very interesting country at a turning point in their history so I do recommend you go.  The tourist infrastructure is working at close to capacity but there are still far fewer travelers than there will be very soon.  It's a window of opportunity and I urge you to take it.

I'm curious to hear from some travelers about their itinerary.  I'm thinking of traveling with my son in Dec for maybe 2 weeks or so.

With limited time, the majority of travelers fly the Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, Kalaw (hill country), Inle Lake circuit.  With extra time, the coast can also be visited.  Land transportation is unreliable and roads are in extremely poor condition.  December is peak season with hotel rooms in high demand.  You will also want to pre-book internal flights.  If you can get a Myanmar-based travel agent to book all this for you, it would be less expensive than booking from your home country.  Good luck!

I visited Myanmar in December and although I booked my hotels and flights in advance, I found it easy to do so through Oway and Agoda. I visted Bagan, Inle Lake and Yangon.

I have a trip report that includes a detailed itinerary, including price, booking site, etc. (post 2). The majority of the rest of the posts are photos, impressions of my stay and general advice.

The local agents can get you room, even last minutes, but they normally charge the high rate.
