Is it even possible to get off the beaten path in Burma?

by laura agd »

Every tour description I see seems to be going to the same places. And though I've done a bit of research about going on my own, it seems like the hotel rooms are really scarce and homestays not allowed. Has anyone been who can comment?

I was in Burma for several weeks about a year ago.  I made my own arrangements and because I was not on a tour was able to get a bit off the beaten path.  But it's true that there are several main areas with infrastructure for tourists.  I suggest you make hotel reservations where you can in advance and I think you'll find that some lesser known accommodations will be available once you're there in case there are gaps in your itinerary or, as I found, I was unhappy with some and was able to move to another.  My Yangon accommodation made flight reservations for me within the country which I paid for, along with accommodations on arrival.

Rooms may seem to be scarce but construction was going on and new places or expanded places are opening all the time.  I'd encourage you to try to do it on your own.  It takes longer to make arrangements than it does in other countries in the region but if you're persistent you'll manage it and I wouldn't be afraid of a few gaps which you can fill in, often with the help of other places you stay along the way.  It also helps to go at other than peak travel times so too late certainly for this year.

Here is an example:

But be ready to accept some uncertainty. No risk no fun!

I have different way of thinking. Myanmar now seems to be a place of tourists. Sometimes if you don't arrange things in advance, you'll never make it yourself. But there is one to do it both. I mean you can do tours by yourself but you can ask tour agency to book hotel for you to ensure that you'll never have to wait somewhere or go checking streets to streets to find a place to stay. That sounds no fun at all.
