Ferry from Montreal to Quebec City?

by rosie »

Can anyone help me with information about travelling from Montreal to Quebec City. I had thought that there would be some kind of ferry transport but have only been able to find return sightseeing cruises.  Is there any other kind of ferry service?  If not, how long does the train take and is that a scenic journey?  I don't really like bus transport so am hoping that there are some options other than that. Thanks, for your suggestions. (we will be there in early January. Not sure if that will have an impact on boat travel)

There is train service between the two cities with ViaRail.  Google viarail.com for fares & schedules.  Trip is probably about 2 hours.  You  could always rent a car but in January I would not recommend  planning a road trip to Quebec City from Montreal.

Thanks for your help, Arion. I will investigate the train. We would not drive at that time of the year. Another question: what sort of shoes do you think we will need to walk around the streets of Quebec and Montreal in early January? We are from a sub-tropical area of Australia and don't have snow shoes etc. Would waterproof hiking boots with rubber tread on the sole be adequate? Thanks for any suggestions.  Rosie.

Well, you won't need snowshoes unless you plan to go into the woods!  Your hiking boots would serve you well but they are a bit heavy to travel with.  You may want to wait and see what the streets are like and buy some footwear here.  Unless there is a blizzard of major proportions, the streets & sidewalks are quite walkable and almost devoid of snow most days due to the city's snow removal expertise and millions of dollars worth of equipment (our tax dollars at work).  Be warned, though, January can be very cold.  Very.  Again, the stores will be chock-a-block with post-Christmas sales of warm winter clothing should you need it.

It  just occurred to me that your Australian Ugg boots are very popular here in Montreal for winter.  You will be shocked at how expensive they are, too.  Maybe bring them?

Thanks so much for your reply.  I will certainly think about the Ugg Boots...they are very warm and comfortable.  And I look forward to some shopping, even if just to keep warm!
