Westward bound LAX to CPT

by paweber »

If I recall correctly you can fly non-stop EZE-JNB and on to CPT if you want to visit South America.

Heading west from California, you can route yourself a variety of different ways. For example from Singapore you can take Singapore Air to CPT with a stop in JNB. Or you could go from SIN to IST or DXB then head south from there. It is not going to be a shorter trip compared to flying east.

There is a non-stop from JFK to JNB. Routing eastbound LAX-JFK-JNB-CPT is 11,233 miles one way. Routing LAX-NRT-SIN-JNB-CPT is 14,946 miles. It is still shorter to travel eastbound - look at the Great Circle routes (http://www.gcmap.com).

Also look into round-the-world tickets and fares.

Thanks for the advice.  I will pursue it.

It seems international flights go to JNB for customs clearance, then transfer to elsewhere.  On another travel site, all of the recent posters were routing to through JNB regardless of airline--Delta, South Africa, etc.  I guess that is the one port of entry.  And that is OK.  We would just start the trip in JNB.

Since I live on the west side of the United States, it seems to me it would be less distance and hassle to travel west.  My travel agent friend and all the airline sites I check tell me that I must fly to London and/or a European destination to get to South Africa.  Suggestions for traveling westward?  Is there routing from South America, Hong Kong, Singapore?

It seems I have a penchant for wanting to travel to destinations that are difficult.  In April we went to Taiwan.  My travel choices were to fly for 14 hrs to HKG and then up to Taiwan, or to HNL>NRT>TPE with looonnnnggg layovers in every airport.  But, Taiwan was worth it!

Suggestions most welcome.  We are hoping to make the trip to South Africa in their fall of 2015, so I do have some time to work on this.

Howzit joskel,

SAA used to offer flights direct between Cape Town and Buenos Airies (and also Sao Paulo some time ago) but this has been re-routed to Johannesburg since the end of March, much to the disdain of Cape Town-based travel agents and tour operators who had spent considerable time into building a relationship with their associates in Buenos Airies. I agree with the expert PAWeber that travelling via JFK is the most direct (albeit indirect) option, but this means entering South Africa at Johannesburg. Just a note regarding the westbound options, while Turkish Airlines offer a Istanbul-Cape Town flight, it usually still travels via Johannesburg where they pick-up/drop-off passengers. The Emirates flight between Dubai and Cape Town however, is a truly direct flight with no stop in Johannesburg.

Happy planning,

Darren Humphrys
