So much fun at Las Fallas festival in Denia!

by AnneT »

We had an insider's experience of the famous Valencian Fallas festival in the exquisite seaside resort town of Denia, curated by the private tour guide, Kelly O'Donnell. During the Fallas festival, neighborhoods all over town erect enormous and beautifully designed artistic monuments, and celebrate a week filled with firecrackers, processions of men and women dressed in the most ornate traditional costumes, lively bands parading through the streets, and culminating the festival on March 19 by burning all the monuments down on the last night in huge bonfires. It is quite the festival!

Kelly provided us with special access to private events such as a traditional celebration meal with one of the Falla groups, and arranged for us to meet with locals supporters of the festival to learn about their traditions. We felt like we were embraced as friends by the community in a cultural exchange rather than spectator tourists. I also wanted to learn how to cook a traditional Valencian paella, and Kelly set us up with a local grandma and grandpa who invited us into their home for a delightful afternoon of making tapas and cooking paella outside on the patio.

We never ate so well, with Kelly picking all of our restaurants in an award winning town for gastronomy in Europe. The gambas of Denia truly are legendary, and the jamon iberico is divine. Kelly took us to picturesque restaurants overlooking the mediterranean sea with amazing food, and the best tapas on Calle Loreto and Marques de Campo.

We also toured the ruins of a moorish castle, took side trips to a ceramics factory as well as a tour of an enchanting mountain top town, and the local markets.

Our hotel overlooking the port of Denia was perfect, and we could not have asked for anything more. Kelly made the trip spectacular for us, and handled every detail, including driving us everywhere and all our airport transfers. It was a truly seamless experience, and Kelly was super flexible to help us adjust as needed throughout the trip.

We felt like Kelly provided us a cultural experience instead of a tour. She's simply amazing and I wanted to share my recommendation for anyone who is interested in a truly customized travel experience.  I highly recommend her.

Can you tell us more about the trip and less about "Kelly"?  You used almost as many superlatives as the President of the United States.  Which restaurants?  Which castle? Which enchanting mountaintop town? Which perfect hotel--what made it perfect? .
