Travelling Sri Lanka

by garry »

Hi All,

I've been on sri lanka last 2 weeks and yes its a magical nation. Surrounded by golden beaches this island has lot to offer to all the tourists all arround the globe.

After arriving at BIA(Katunayake Airport) I had a driver organised from to pick me up and then went to Pinnawala Elephent Orphange. Fed some milk for little elephants  & had an elephant back ride across the stream.

Then left to Dambulla. First we went to Golden cave Temple then went to Sigiriya Rock Fortress saw the nice frescoes there. Next morning straight away went to Kandy stopped at a spice village on the way. At Kandy first we went to Tooth Temple, Udawatte kele and then Royal Bottanical gardens. Have to state that if you are looking for some excursions the correct place is here in Kandy the centre of the country and the items (from cutlery, handicrafts to gems) are moderately priced.

Had a leisure day at the hotel and on the next day visit Lanka thilaka,Gadladeniye and Embekka then had a look at some brass item manufacturing shops. Arrived to the hotel at late afternoon had some break.

Then we left to NuwaraEliya known as the Little England where the climate is so cold and you can see the old Cottage type buildings as in England. Had a city tour and on the next day we visited the Horton Planes for hiking. Also had a look at the tea states and working tea factory as well(free).

After staying two nights at Nuwar Eliya we left to Elle or known as Little Adams Peak. Did Hiking there and the climate was so cold. Had some local food watched the Rawana Falls.

Next day we started our journey towards Yala National Park. Early morning at 5.00 a.m  went to the Safari at national park and I had the rare chance of seeing the leopard and the bear in my journey as well as some other animals too. Local said it is occasionally that some could see both these animals on a safari and I felt that I am so lucky.

Next Day left to Mirissa but could not plan a Whale watching tour because the climate was not good hence stayed at the beach the whole next to the hotel we stayed.

Went to Bentota stayed three days there and did some Water Sports, Did a river safari and visit all the islands, went to turtle hatchery as well. Stayed leisurely on the beaches for two days and left to Colombo. Next day did a Colombo city tour(BMICH, Indepandence Square, Gangaramaya, Seemamalka etc) and went to Negombo. Now we had to arrange our baggages to our early departure to the airport.

Thats my Sri Lanka tour and I want to thank everybody hotel crew, management and above all the driver Mr. Leo from for helping us both to make this tour a success and a memorable one. Big Thank You and this is the best tour of my life.

Your post brings back some beautiful memories of Sri Lanka, Garry.  Thanks for the detailed description.

Which part of the country did you enjoy the most?  Or is it impossible to choose??

Sri Lanka has beautiful beaches, but so do many other countries.  I especially enjoyed the archaeology, like Sigiriya and Dambulla, as well as the beautiful tea country around Nuwara Eliya.   The cool climate of the tea country was especially welcome after the hot humid weather of the coast.
