French or Ducht side

by Pauline Frommer »

Well, the Dutch side is less expensive because it doesn't use the Euro. So if that's a factor, you may want to consider staying there. It's also consider "hipper" nowadays, as there's been more new development there. And the best beach? The one right next to the airport (you tan as planes fly overhead; it's actually quite fun).

Have a wonderful trip! Best, Pauline Frommer

Well, because the French side uses the Euro it tends to be more expensive, so that might be a factor in your choice. Its also inhibited development on that side of the island, making the Dutch side a tad hipper and newer. But both sides have much to recommend them. My favorite beach? The one at the airport. You tan as planes fly overhead (it's a lot of fun).

Have a wonderful trip!

I've alwys thought that St Marten sounded really cool becuase of the two cultures, but I guess you gotta pick one or the other tho you can visit each. Which side has better hotels and restaurants and beaches and bars? And how long does it take to get from 1 to the other? Thx

Well, because the French side uses the Euro, the Dutch side is more affordable. And because of that it's had more development in recent years, so hipper hotels and restaurants. That being said, both sides are nice. As for how long it takes to get from one to the other, that depends on the traffic (which can be bad) and where you are. The Dutch side is much smaller.

I like the Dutch side better. Much more up to date, less jammed with traffic, newer resorts and restaurants.

My wife and I just returned from a week on the island, my first visit in 20 years and her first visit ever. We stayed on the French side and found it much quieter and less developed. The Dutch side has 12 casinos and highrise gated hotels. The Dutch capital Philipsburg is crowded and features one jewelry store after another. Philipsburg is also the port for the cruiise ships. The French side is much more European. We found it much more to our liking.

If you are an all-inclusive resort type person and you don't like foreign countries, then the Dutch side is better.
