13 Day Affordable Trip to Turkey

by ningcao »

I am a retired mom who loves traveling and seeing the world. When traveling, I enjoy experiencing the local culture more than anything else and this Turkey trip was extremely rewarding in that fashion.

I mostly do self-guided tours and do my own homework. This time it was a bit different because 3 of my friends wanted me to join them in a 13 days guided tour. As a pretty much first time participant of guided tour, I followed them with this travel company, Gate 1 Travel. They were pretty good and I would recommend them to anyone because of the price to quality ratio. For a 13 day tour going around almost all of Turkey, including flight, food, lodging and a bit of shopping, I spend just under $2000 USD.

Guided tour is probably more affordable than self-guided. Combine that with no stress in a foreign language environment, and the people I’ve met are very nice, I would definitely recommend it. As I am getting older, I also have to consider about security issues, which guided tour might be more accommodating. For those who are searching for deals, I think Gate 1 Travel is a good place to consider.

Just some personal thoughts, thanks!

Of course it all depends on the style you travel in, but when looking at the numbers, I've always found that self-guided vacations tend to be more cost-effective than guided ones. But I'm glad you had a good time with Gate 1 and hope you didn't post here in an attempt to get a discount on your next tour from that company. I've spoken with an officer of Gate 1 and they have promised that they will change their policy of rewarding customers in this fashion, as it does lead to reviews that can't really be trusted.

Pauline:  Thanks for your comments.  We don't want the Forum to get into an advertising gimic or positive reviews by employees of some companies.  This is quite commen in China and difficult to get the real information.   As a retired tour operator to China with over 25 years experience I try to give common sense information that is helpful to people.  My wife and I go to different countries each fall to enjoy the cultures.  Some we do on our own in Europe, others we do with small group tours and sometimes combine the small group tours with some extended time on our own.  There are many ways to travel but trying to save money on your own can often cost more and spend more time with the infrastructure and language problems rather than enjoying your travel and sightseeing days.   We have had  some poor experiences also with some tour companies as well as wonderful tours with others. In general I think that having a private guided tour or small group tour one sees more and enjoys themselves more perhaps rather than spending expensive time trying to figure out things on your own just to save a little money.   After all the purpose to travel and tour is to enjoy oneself rather than make work out of it.  That's my take on it for what it is worth.
