Just home from two weeks in Turkey with Gate 1 Travel

by joanne joseph »

Turkey is a land where many cultures have dominated, been overthrown, conquered, and deported.  It sits on the ancient Silk Road at the crossroad between East and West.   The amount of information gained and the variety of experiences on a trip like this is mind-boggling.   Just some of the highlights included visiting ruins that date back 3500 years, seeing naturally eroded rock formations that look like they belong on another planet, walking along the Aegean Sea at sunset, wading in travertine pools on the side of a cliff filled by natural hot springs, viewing frescos from the 10-12 century that are still vibrantly colored, seeing the glory that was Ephesus, being entranced by Whirling Dervishes, going up in a hot air balloon before dawn to float over fairy chimneys, entering an underground city built to house 60,000 people for three months, and exploring the sights of Istanbul including the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Grand Bazaar, Basilica Cistern, Spice Market, and walking on the Galata Bridge.    We managed to see so many highlights by taking an organized tour through Gate 1.  We found them to be an excellent value for the money.  They employ top notch tour leaders, professional safe drivers, select good accomodations that are well located and make sure that you have the opportunity to see the highlights wherever you travel with them.

Joanne:  Thanks for this lovely synopsis of your trip!  We are leaving on March 20 for the 13-day Affordable Turkey with Gate1.  We are so excited.  Do you have any more details, hints, suggestions or anything else of note that you can offer us?  Thanks in advance!

Hi Christie,

I wrote about each day on our trip, what we saw, where we stayed, a few eating recommendations as well as a bunch of pictures from each day.  You can check it out here:

I hope you love Turkey!  We certainly did.

Safe travels,

Joanne

Christie,

Thanks for taking the time to read my blog and I'm so glad that you enjoyed it.

I used both my iPad and my Apple lap top.  It is easier for me to do my photo editing on the laptop so I carry both with me.  It is a bit of an overkill, but we still manage to get by with just carry on luggage.  Wishing you a great time in Turkey.  I would love to hear how you like it.

Joanne:  I just finished your travel blog.  Very nice, informative and your photos were lovely.  From the looks of it, it was cooler weather when you were there, and I think we will have some of the same.  I appreciated you including a bit about your meal time experiences and a few comments on the hotels.  I think we are in some of the same, but a few are different (we're in the Gulsoy in Istanbul, for example).  I did see you mentioned doing your blog from an iPad, and wondered if you have any hints, suggestions, etc. about that, as I will also be using my iPad.

Thanks so much for sharing your blog.  I'm going to do something similar, perhaps a bit more abbreviated, on Facebook.  I did that last year when we went to Ecuador and it worked pretty well.  We are very excited - counting down now!  Only four more days!  If I think of any questions, I may get back in touch. Again, thanks for sharing the blog, I really enjoyed it.
