Visiting Rural Ukraine
My father made a visit in the early 1980s to Medzhibozh, in Ukraine; it's the town his father came to the U.S. from. It appeared not to be any bigger, perhaps smaller, than when my grandfather left in 1902.
I've started thinking about a trip to the former Soviet Union, and if it gets off the planning stage, I think I'd like to make Medzhibozh a part of it. It was difficult to organize when my father went, partly because of its off-the-path rural status and partly because of government issues. I'd appreciate any advice on strategies for now; my sense is that it may be the classic "Nice place to visit, but you wouldn't want to (perhaps couldn't) stay there."
