Zambia and Victoria Falls
Year before last we went to several African countries including Victoria Falls, Zambia. Though we enjoyed our trip to Zambia, you could easily see that it was behind it's adjoining countries of Botswana and South Africa. I remember how totally annoyed I was when the woman at the border wouldn't accept my Passport from me but in a very arrogant manner told me to 'give it to my husband to give to her'. Well, don't ask me how, but I was somehow able to actually control myself although it went against everything in me to have to do it. I realized that she was just testing me and that I needed to get on with our schedule instead of fighting on women's issues just this once.
When we arrived at our hotel we were impressed that we received an printed invitation to 'High Tea' in the hotel. That was fun and the desserts were wonderful too. As we arrived at our hotel, there was a group of young people dressed in their native attire and playing various types of drums in island type music.
We went to Victoria Falls, but before we went, we knew that it was the low season for the falls but it was still nice and it was obvious that when it is in it's high season there is a lot of water coming off the falls. The one thing that I didn't really like was that there were a lot of young men who insisted on showing you the falls and regardless of your saying no, they tagged along and kept on and on.
At our hotel, we were on the second floor with a small balcony. I walked out on the balcony one morning only to see about 5 or 6 Zebra grazing beneath our balcony. So, we grabbed our cameras and ran down to take photos thinking they would be running. They didn't seem to mind at all and hung around the hotel for a couple of hours before they finally continued on their way. We actually went to the falls and back and they were still there so it was quite a while.
There was a market place with lots of handmade items, some of which looked pretty good. However, be aware that they were able to work together to take advantage of people. For example, one guy told me that he'd give me a price break if I bought everything from him and he'd work it out with the others. Well, we negotiated the price on some pretty marble type bowls and quite a few other things. When he began wrapping it another couple of guys rushed over to help him. I watched them as much as I could and I'm sure they wrapped the marble items, but they did something with them and didn't put them in the bag. So I really got ripped off for several items. Otherwise it was fun though.
If you are going to Victoria Falls or elsewhere in Zambia be aware that a Yellow Fever vaccination is required. If you should get away with not having it going into Zambia, you will have a problem getting out as the US requires it and will quarantine you if you don't have proof of having had it. Also, should you try to enter South Africa, you will be turned away without proof too.
