Some airlines have put domestic flights on sale. Others have offered Europe, or the Caribbean. This week, Northwest decided to do away with being coy and just put everything on sale -- all 215 cities the airline serves.
Loyal readers of this Newsletter can get one night free if you stay for seven nights or longer in one of over 300 homes available near Disney World from AAA Dream Homes, whose properties start as low as $79 per night if you book seven or more nights. That's for a home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms -- not to mention a pool!
These fares require at least a two-week advance purchase, and they're only available on a very limited set of routes, but they keep the promise of substantial savings. All the sale fares apply to one-way tickets, traditionally much more expensive than roundtrip tickets on European trains.
Only a year or two ago, it seemed that the days of the old ocean liners were finally coming to an end, with nearly all the pre-1980 ships in the American market either laid up or scheduled to be sold or redeployed abroad. Thus, it came as a wonderful surprise this week when Norwegian Cruise Line announced its purchase of the SS United States, a legendary vessel that's long been the subject of determined preservation efforts.

From Michael Lebowitz: "I just returned from a 7 day Caribbean cruise on the Zuiderdam (4/12/03). Here are a few comments that I have."
From MJP: "Beware! My husband and I got a nice bargain in February via Priceline for a five night stay that turned out to be at the Thistle Royal Horseguards Hotel in London. As per Priceline requirements, we paid by charge card immediately when our bid was accepted, and that bid was non-refundable. We are now in dispute over being charged twice for that stay! We liked the hotel, especially for its location and fine lobby, but we did not charge anything else there"
From Patricia Shatz: "I recently joined a wonderful, warm, open and very friendly travel group with people from all over whose love is for travel. I am so impressed by their enthusiasm & warmth. It is a forum for exchanging information on destinations and everything related to travel."
From Jason Holt: "Last year's 'fake policemen' scam has returned with a variation. It now appears that you will be approached by somebody wanting to change some money in order to 'get back to their hotel.' You are then approached by two 'plain clothes policemen' (who speak some English) who ask to search you, your bag and your wallet."
From Rudy & Odette Koster: "Yesterday the new Tempisque Bridge over the Gulf of Nicoya to the Nicoya Pensinsula and Guanacaste was opened, just in time for Semana Santa / Easter. The bridge will replace the ferry and will cut down travel times from San Jos┬┐ to the peninsula with at least an hour to an hour and a half. At the moment the use of the bridge is still free, but as of the End of May or the beginning of June a toll of 200 colones (half a US dollar) will be charged."
