It goes without saying, the men and women serving in the U.S. military have had a rough few months. The war in Iraq led the government to call up thousands of reservists, separating them from their families and jobs, and whether they've been inhaling the dust of Qatar or the stench of the Times Square subway station, they've earned some R&R.
Roswell, a longtime center of the weird, is holding its annual UFO Festival on July 3 to 5, 2003, 55 years after the original "mystery" of a supposed alien spacecraft crash nearby occurred. Tickets for the festival are just $2 a person, a price that is also out of this world.
If you're planning a family trip to Disney World, Universal Studios or any of the central Florida theme parks, we've negotiated a sweet deal for you.
One of the best bonding experiences a family can enjoy is a group outing in Mother Nature. A non-profit organization based in Minneapolis, the Wilderness Inquiry has been making such activities possible since 1978, while helping out people with disabilities and other disadvantaged folks as well. The prices are good, in part, due to generous contributions from compassionate donors. One excellent example: $375 for a three-night "Canoe Adventure" in cool Maine this July and August (with half price for youths 16 and under).
I love New York so much that I had to share it with someone, so I signed up to be a Big Apple Greeter, a free, volunteer don't-call-me-a-tour-guide who walks tourists around neighborhoods and talks about the city. About twice a month, I call into the Big Apple Greeter office and pick the name of a likely soul off their list of tourists looking for friends. People in other cities around the world do them same.
Here's a quick and handy list of accommodations proprietors that matter. Most, if not all, will have seasonal and regional specials posted on their individual sites. Just look for "Special Offers," "Hot Deals" or something similar on the mainpages to start your comparison shopping for the best deals.

Reader's Voice
From Dan Stegner: "I'm going with the family to Washington, D.C. for the July 4th weekend. Does anybody have any suggestions or tips about the best place to watch fireworks?"
From Norma Tower: "There is much more to Philadelphia than downtown (or Center City as it is called), though that's great, too. One area of interest is University City, where the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University campuses are located plus many great ethnic and trendy restaurants. Here also is the the award-winning Restaurant School, which serves meals planned and cooked by its students. I'd love to hear suggestions from other readers."
From Linda Campbell: "We plan to attend the Pops concert on the Esplanade on July 4th. Please sends tips on transportation, best arrival times for a good view and other insider information that will make the experience more enjoyable."
From Katy Poole: "My family will be in Flagstaff for 4th of July. Where are the best places to go to watch fireworks?"
From Sheryl Sane: "Any suggestions for the best place in Manhattan to view the fireworks?"
