Officials participated in a ceremony that happens every day on land but hasn't happened on a large, modern cruise ship in ages: They raised the American flag.
In this edition, look for larger ships heading to Bermuda, learn how to earn frequent flier miles when you cruise, discover underwater programs for kids in the South Pacific and more.
Well-worn routes are fine for new cruisers who haven't seen the same handful of Caribbean ports before or for those who could care less where the ship's going. But for veterans who have been there, done that; we've got other options.

From Kerrin Griffith: "Carnival and Norwegian seem to be the only lines leaving from New York for Caribbean/Canada/Bermuda, and both have been slammed on these boards. Should I skip the whole idea of cruising from NYC, or has someone out there had a good experience with them when departing from the Big Apple? Thanks."
From caklakamp: "We are planning an Eastern Caribbean cruise for June 2005. We like the itinerary for the Holland America Line and Princess Cruise Line (we were going to do a Disney cruise, that is, before they announced that the ship will be moved to California and doing Mexican Riviera cruises). Does any one have feedback on the children's programs available on HAL or Princess? Our children will be 6 & 9 at that time. Thanks!"
From Molly Green: "Hello. We are planning to pack a bottle of alcohol in our luggage (not our carryon) and wonder if this will cause us any problems as we check in for our cruise. Is luggage searched and/or is alchohol confiscated prior to boarding ship? We are not really trying to pull a fast one here, rather we would like to enjoy a cocktail in our cabin without always going through room service or always going to one of the pricey bars on ship. Any thoughts on this?"
From Sandra Holloway: "Is there such a thing as a river or barge cruise, in Southern Europe (Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece) or France or that offers cooking classes and/or wine tasting along the way? I'd really like to go on an eduational/participatory/active cruise but cringe at the thought of huge cruise ships , long lines and having to dress up on vacation. This is all new to me. I never thought I'd go on a cruise ship but a small river ship or barge cruises may be a nice alternative."
From Richard Raynor: "Beware Celebrity Guarantee Program on the Horizon and Zenith. You can get a cabin that is totally unacceptable. Celebrity is probably the only cruiseline that would put passengers in the stern these ships. These cabins are completely uninhabitable and Celebrity knows it (at least according to the chief concierge)."
