Airfare Deals and News for the Week of March 11, 2011

Airfare sales from American and United, plus advice on how much time you should budget for tight connections.

United Adds Service between Denver & Texas

Starting April 3, United Airlines (tel. 800/241-622; www.united.com) will kick up service between Denver and Texas with nonstop flights to Amarillo, Lubbock, and Dallas Love. Introductory fares are available for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays through May 28. Sale fares require a 21-day advance purchase, and are not available on blackout dates March 17-20, and 24-27.

Round-trip fares include:

Transfer Miles between United & Continental

After a few failed attempts to put our United Mileage Plus miles to use, we were pleased to discover that we can transfer them over to Continental OnePass to our benefit. Yes, miles are now transferable among OnePass and Mileage Plus accounts, so shift 'em around however needed (for award tickets, non-ticket rewards, or a little extra push to a higher elite status) until next year rolls around, when the two programs combine into one.

When transferring miles, just remember:

Miles can be transferred once a day, in increments of 1,000, with a limit of 200,000 per transfer.

You can transfer miles only between accounts in your name.

Change your mind? You have 24 hours to return miles to their original account. Transferring miles will not affect your elite status in either program.

Shanghai Sale from American Airlines

Save on late spring travel to Shanghai, with the current sale from American Airlines (tel. 800/433-7300; www.aa.com). Depart between April 5 and May 5, and complete travel by July 5. Sale fares valid for daily travel.

Tickets require a 3-night minimum stay, with an allowed maximum stay of 2 months.

Tickets must be purchased at least 7 days prior to departure or within 1 day of making reservations, whichever comes first, but no later than 11:59pm CT, March 28. Round-trip fares include:

Web Specials from Alaska Airlines

Alaska Airlines' (tel. 800/426-0333; www.alaskaair.com) current crop of Web Specials features some swell fares for travel between Alaska & the Pacific Northwest to the of the U.S. and Canada. Valid travel dates may vary by route, though you'll find most available from April 4 through April 21. Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights or all days. Some markets may not operate daily service. All fares require immediate purchase.

Round-trip fares include:

From the Mailbag: Unavoidable Connections

Q: I know you always say, "Avoid connecting flights." However, I live in Syracuse, N.Y. and wherever I go, I must make at least one connecting flight -- especially to Europe. But it's harder and harder to figure how much time to allow between flights. The listings when I search online often give choices between under two hours or eight hours in the connecting airport. Help us out with some advice when connections are unavoidable.

A: Gladly! Read on.
