As America begins to return to normal (or so it would seem), travelers are beginning to take to the air again, not only within the country, but increasingly, to overseas destinations. And with growing confidence, the airlines are starting to troll for customers, using lower fares as bait. Leading the pack is US Airways, but not far behind is Orbitz, the mighty Web site for the major airlines and their bargains, and little National, which is conducting its own skirmish.

At US Airways, you have until midnight on Friday, May 10, 2002, to purchase round trip airfare starting at just $136 through their "Time to Mow the Fare" sale. Interestingly enough, many of the posted sample fares have already gone down in price, so be sure to click the "search" button to see the possibly-lower price next to the sample fare found here,www.usairways.com/promotions/specials/system_sale.htm.

Current respectable domestic fares include:

Boston to San Diego $210 (down $118 from posted sale fare)
Jacksonville to Baltimore $130 (down $10)
NYC to Seattle $278
Pittsburgh to LA $219 (down $119)
Richmond to New Orleans $188
Washington to Ft. Lauderdale 130 (down $10)

Overseas fares of interest include:

LA to Paris $718 (down $176)
Philadelphia to London $407 (down $207)
Pittsburgh to Amsterdam $558 (down $196)
San Francisco to London $576
Washington, D.C. to Manchester $355 (down $361)

Prices appear to being fluctuating rapidly and may be higher or lower by the time you receive our Newsletter, so check out the sale as soon as possible. To reach US Airways, phone them at 800/428-4322 or go to www.usairways.com. You have to buy 14 days in advance of travel. You can go to the Caribbean or Europe starting June 16 2002. All travel must be completed by August 31, 2002 for domestic, Canada and Caribbean destinations, and by September 5 2002 for European destinations. Minimum Saturday night stay is required, maximum 30-day stay. Fares are for travel Mondays through Thursdays (but Mondays through Wednesdays for London and Manchester). Rates do not include excise tax, September 11th Security Fee, airport passenger facility charges, etc. Seats are limited or may be sold out during busy travel times. "Other conditions may apply," they say.

At National, based in Las Vegas, you can get savings up to 20% off everywhere they fly when you book on their Web site, www.nationalairlines.com. Fares are as low as $68 roundtrip between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Other great deals include fares as low as $118 roundtrip between Dallas/Ft. Worth and Las Vegas. Other cities served include Chicago, Miami, New York (JFK), Newark, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle.

Go to www.orbitz.com for a summer airfare sale, to be found under their "Deals" section. In addition to the Flights information (e.g. Latin American fares from $325 or City Saver fares to Atlanta from $81), there are areas for hot bargains in hotels, cruises, package tours or last-minute getaways, as well as weekend car rental deals and a "Top 20" listing. A companion-flies-free package to Bermuda goes for $848 and up, a sale to Mexico (up to 35% savings, they say) from $426. As to last-minute getaways, Orbitz offers a Los Angeles trip from $195, a West Palm Beach package from $358 and a Las Vegas one from $223. And don't forget about the free Frommer's guide included with non-refundable roundtrip airfare purchases.
