But It's a Dry Heat: Arizona is Awash in Outdoor Action at Nominal Cost

Things are heating up in the desert this summer. There are sizzling deals that will take the sweat out of traveling south. Whether you are going golfing, surveying the Grand Canyon, hugging the Mexican border or want to have a shoot out at the OK Corral, Arizona is a beautiful vacation destination.

Things are heating up in the desert this summer. There are sizzling deals that will take the sweat out of traveling south. Whether you are going golfing, surveying the Grand Canyon, hugging the Mexican border or want to have a shoot out at the OK Corral, Arizona is a beautiful vacation destination.

You can always rely on Southwest Vacations (tel. 800/243-8372; www.swavacations.com) to have special deals, and Arizona is no exception. They are currently running a special airfare and accommodation package to Phoenix from Omaha for $399 per person including round-trip airfare and two-nights accommodation at the Phoenician Hotel. The same deal from Chicago starts at $404 and from Providence, $424 per person. Or stay at the Wigwam Resort and Golf Resort and get two nights accommodation and round-trip airfare from Oakland for $259 per person. From Kansas City, the price starts at $334 and from Tampa or Hartford, the rate is $359. Seven-days advance purchase required and taxes are additional.

America West Vacations (tel. 800/235-9298; www.americawestvacations.com) is featuring reduced rates on summer escapes to Phoenix, with packages that include round-trip airfare and three-nights accommodation at the elegant Hyatt Regency Phoenix from now until the end of August, 2005. Sample package prices for select Tuesday departures including all taxes and fees are:

  • $281 from San Francisco
  • $342 from Denver
  • $396 from Chicago
  • $409 from Boston
  • $498 from New York

All prices are per person based on double occupancy.

Travelocity (www.travelocity.com) has also put together some attractive Arizona getaway packages. Midweek round-trip airfare to Tucson from Chicago in August and three-nights accommodation starts at $343 per person including taxes, flying Delta and staying at the Econolodge Tucson. Or for $97 more, upgrade to the four-diamond Omni Tucson National Resort. The same deal from Newark or Boston starts at $426 per person including taxes, or $75 more staying at the Omni. If you book by July 15, 2005 for travel by August 31, 2005 and pay using MasterCard, receive $75 off any Travelocity flight/hotel combination (a minimum of two nights stay required) using the promotional code SUMMER75.

Hotels.com (tel. 800/246-8357; www.hotels.com) has a Fourth of July special for celebrating the nation's independence in the desert. Stay at the historic and lavish Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa from only $94 per night -- that's almost $100 off summer rack rates. The Resort is the perfect spot to be pampered at the spa and soak up the desert surroundings. There are also two golf courses, eight pools, a mini-golf course, badminton, croquet, and children's programs to keep you busy. This rate is available until July 29, 2005 and bookings must be made by July 1, 2005. Another exceptional deal in Phoenix can be found at the Arizona Golf Resort and Conference Center where rooms start at a low $65 per night, you get $25% off food at the Resort and golf is a mere $1 a hole. At the Scottsdale Resort, rates start at $67 per night and with their Summer Quencher deal, you save 50% off breakfast and beverages as well as 10% off massages this summer.

For your Grand Canyon trip, stay at the Bell Rock Inn and Suites in Sedona with rates starting from $100 per night through Hotels.com. Stay for two-nights and save 50% off the third night. Stay for three-nights and save 75% off the fourth night or stay five-nights and receive the last night free. At the Best Western Inn at Sedona, rooms start at $103 per night and stay for four-nights and receive the last night free.
