Getting around your destination by plane makes sense only if you are in some huge area or country, like China, for instance, where highly prized tourist targets such as Xian are two hours or more by plane from the capital. (And the Silk Road is twice as far, again.) Surely, think of domestic plane travel within India and Russia, too. Within Europe, the train and car are best, of course, and moving from one Latin American country to another often requires a plane, as there are few border crossings by bus and none by train. Local fares in parts of the worlds outside Western Europe and North America are not too high, and in China, for instance, can be quite low. If you plan to fly around Europe, consider the air passes sold by Europe-By-Plane, tel. 888/387-2479.
