When to Go the Caribbean

What you need to know about cost, weather and activities for regional travel before you go.

Costs

There are really just two seasons here--high (expensive) and low (sometimes 20% to 50% less). The high season runs from mid December through the end of April, with holiday stayovers and those around Presidents' Day weekend even more costly.

Weather

It's summer year round here, with average temperatures between 75°F and 85°F. Nighttime and early morning may see drops to the 50s, however, so take a sweater. It's usually driest in the winter, when the high season (mid December through April) is in swing, but it can be wet in the mountains anytime of the year. The hurricane season runs from June through November, so take care during those months.

Activities

Most people think the Caribbean is just for lying around on the beach, and, after all, that is the great way to relax. There isn't much in the way of indoor things to do, and you really will want to stay outside as much as possible, anyhow. Every kind of water sport is to be found here, including snorkeling, diving, sailing, deep-sea fishing, windsurfing, rafting and going down in a submarine. Other outdoor activities widely available include hiking, biking, horseback riding, golf, tennis, cruises and boat charters, to mention just a few. Indoors, a few, mostly inadequate, museums grace the island chain, but again, save them for the rare rainy day.
