I worry about all those new high-speed trains in Europe, whisking travelers, say, from London to Paris in three hours. Before long, the sleeping car will have gone the way of the steam engine, and one of Europe's greatest experiences--sleeping on a train--will be nothing but a memory. That's why I urge you, if you're headed to Europe anytime soon, to book yourself a berth on a train. For one thing, it's economical. It saves you the cost of staying in a hotel. For another, you don't waste a day getting from one city to another; you go to sleep and wake up ready to start exploring a new destination. You also escape the hassle of getting to and from airports; the trains take you from one center city to another.

What I like best about sleeping on European trains, though, is the experience. Of course you could find yourself sharing a compartment with strangers who snore. If you can afford it, you'll want your own private compartment for two or four. Happiness is rattling through the night with friends or family that you actually want to rattle through the night with.

My last overnight train experience was from Sicily to Rome. Sure, I could have flown. Instead, my wife and I boarded a late evening train in Taormina. While we slept, the train was taken apart for the ferry ride across the Straits of Messina, then reassembled on the mainland. The next thing we knew, it was early morning and we were in Rome, ready to continue our adventure. I wouldn't have traded the memory for anything.
