Checklist for The Healthy Traveler

What you should know before you go.
  • Limit your exposure to the sun, especially during the first few days of your trip and, thereafter, from 11am to 2pm. Use a sunscreen with a high protection factor and apply it liberally. Remember that children need more protection than adults do.
  • Are there any major health concerns like cholera, Ebola or Lyme's disease here? Do travelers need to get any shots?
  • Should certain foods be avoided?
  • Is the water potable? If not, what's the best coping strategy?
  • Is if difficult to get prescriptions filled? Find a doctor?

  • Are there vegetarian-friendly sites?
  • What is the most reliable hospital or medical center in your destination?
  • What about sun exposure? Ticks? Snakes?
  • What sorts of medicines should travelers carry with them? (Anti-diarrheal, for example)
