Manhattan Summer Weekends For Less

Though spring and fall are New York City's best seasons, in the opinion of many, summer can get a little too hot, with the humidity an uncomfortable factor in this water-edged town. A lot of residents try to get away, and even business visitors decline to hang around on weekends, so the hotels get a little hungry for business. Nine properties owned by the Manhattan East Suite Hotels group want you to come to the Big Apple on weekends instead, so from now through September 1 they're offering "R" and "G" rated packages to lure you in, at rates beginning as low as $153 per night.

At all nine Manhattan East hotels, the "R" (for Romantic) weekend includes lodging in a studio suite, two cocktails at Top of the Tower (on the 26th floor of the landmark Beekman Tower Hotel, overlooking the East River and the United Nations), 30% off tickets for the Central Park Bike Tour, two-for-one tickets for the NY Waterway Harbor Sightseeing Cruise, and choice of free cocktail or dessert with purchase of entree at Larry Forgione's An American Place Restaurant at the Benjamin Hotel.

The "G" (for Good, Clean Fun) weekend includes the same lodging as above, a free child's ticket with purchase of adult ticket for the Central Park Bike Tour, a free entree with purchase of second entree at the extraterrestrial-themed (and very kid-friendly) Mars 2112 Restaurant & Bar, and two-for-one-tickets for the NY Waterway Harbor Sightseeing Cruise.

The rates at all hotels range from $153 to $294 for a studio suite, per night, and $193 to $293 for a one-bedroom suite. Rates vary by hotel, are subject to availability, and taxes are not included.

The nine hotels are:

The Beekman Tower (3 Mitchell Place, 49th St. and 1st Avenue)
The Benjamin (125 E. 50th St. at Lexington Avenue)
Dumont Plaza (150 E. 34th St. btw 3rd and Lexington Avenues)
Eastgate Tower (222 E. 39th St. btw 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
Lyden Gardens (215 E. 64th St. btw 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
Plaza Fifty (155 E. 50th St. btw 3rd and Lexington Avenues)
Shelburne Murray Hill (303 Lexington Avenue at 37th Street)
Southgate Tower (371 Seventh Avenue at 31st Street)
Surrey Hotel (20 E. 76th St. btw 5th and Madison Avenues).

The Central Park Bike Tours involve a leisurely two-hour escorted pedal through the park, available 7 days a week at 10 AM, and 1 and 4 PM. Their Web site is www.centralparkbiketours.com. The New York Waterway Harbor Cruise takes 90 minutes, passing by the State of Liberty, Ellis Island, South Street Seaport, the Brooklyn Bridge, the United Nations, and the Chrysler and Empire State buildings. See their Web site at www.nywaterway.com. The Mars 2112 restaurant's Web site is www.mars2112.com.
