Tips from the Publisher: B&Bs Revisited

Mike Spring responds to readers' reactions to his advice.
I apparently upset some of you with a recent article on B&Bs. What I said was this: "My main complaint with B&Bs is the innkeepers who assault you with their friendliness and ignore the virtues of good-old anonymity. I suppose it can be fun making friends with strangers, but please, not before morning coffee." Did my caustic humor get the better of me? I hope you'll write and let me know. There's no comma after "innkeepers," please note, because I wasn't referring to all innkeepers, but only to a few. The truth is, I love B&Bs, particularly the ones that are one of a kind and bursting with character and charm. It's fun meeting new people and making new friends. I was just taking a soft jab at a small handful of owners who don't seem to understand the meaning of the word "privacy." The secret of a successful B&B visit, I guess, is similar to the secret of a happy life--to expect anything, and to be available--no, not just to be available, but to embrace--whatever comes your way.
