It's a glamorous job, but someone's got to do it. Why not let it be you?
If you've ever dreamed of making a living as a travel writer or photographer you may want to consider attending the 15th Annual Travel Writer's and Photographers Conference this August. Held every year at Book Passages of Corte Madera, California this is by far the most prestigious workshop of its kind, attracting the top editors, writers and photographers in the business who are eager to impart what they know, and perhaps more importantly, scout for new talent.
This year, the faculty includes:
- Amy Tan: Famed author of Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God's Wife
- Pauline Frommer: Editor and creator of the new Pauline Frommer guides
- John Rasmus: Editor in Chief of National Geographic Magazine
- Don George: Global Travel Editor for Lonely Planet guides
- Tim Cahill: Founder of Outside Magazine
- Larry Habegger: Editor of the Traveler's Tales series of books
- John Flinn: Travel Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle
And a number of other distinguished editors, writers and agents -- some of whom got their start in writing and photography at this conference -- will be in attendance, too. Like Elliott Hester, the well-respected author of Plane Insanity who writes this about the impact of the conference on his life, "Before signing up for the Book Passage Travel Writer's Conference, I had never published a travel article. After soaking up information from the conference faculty, I went home and applied what I'd learned. Thanks to Book Passage, I've written more than 100 articles and two travel memoirs, one of which became a bestseller."
Now we can't guarantee you'll become another Elliott Hester, but it sure could be fun to try.
The conference will commence on Thursday, August 16, wrapping up on August 20. Cost for the four days including some meals is $635. Lodging is extra, but the staff will assist you in finding affordable accommodations.
