There will be two week-long workshops, the first session is offered August 5-9; the second runs August 12-16; 10 hours of in-class instruction occur over the course of five mornings, with the afternoons reserved for working on assignments and enjoying all coastal Maine has to offer.
In between the two weekly sessions is a weekend workshop, on August 10 & 11, where there will be 8 hours of instructions on the two mornings and just two afternoons and evenings for assignments and sightseeing. The curriculum is the same, and can be found on the Web site of the sponsor, the Easternmost Institute for the Arts, at www.grangelubec.com/htm/wkshops/workshop/travel2.html.
The institute is sponsoring other workshops as well. Noted artists Linda Allen & Marlowe deChristopher will be leading the Children's Book Illustration Workshop as well as a weekend Pastel Workshop, to be given by deChristopher alone. Marlowe is a former instructor at three prestigious institutions--the Rhode Island School of Design, University of Massachusetts and University of Maine. Linda Allen is a prot? of, and collaborator with, famed artist Tasha Tudor. The cost for the weeklong Children's Book Illustration Workshop (August 12-16, from 9 to noon daily) is $395, which includes a reception the night before classes begin. The Pastel Workshop, costs $225, beginning Friday August 16 from 4 to 6 PM and then meeting on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9 to noon.
A third workshop being offered is on reflexology and reiki (August 10 & 11, with Mary Calder RN, $225), details of which are on the Web site.

The classes will be held at the restored Grange Hall and neighboring Old Library in Lubec, Maine, just across the narrows from historic Campobello Island, the Canadian site where Franklin Roosevelt spent many summer holidays and home now of the Roosevelt International Park, the only such binational park in the USA. The town of Lubec is also noted for its seasonal music programs, including that of the Summer Keys music school, featuring chamber groups and soloists, especially piano. Lubec is an unknown wonder, and is almost "undiscovered," even though it is the easternmost town in the United States. The nearest airport for this Down East location is Bangor, about 125 miles west. Portland's is 225 miles south of Lubec, which is also served by bus out of Bangor.
To register, phone Denise Plouffe, director of the Easternmost Institute, at 207/733-4966 (Maine) or 506/752-2591 (Campobello) or e-mail her at denplffe@aol.com. You can also go to the Web site (www.grangelubec.com) and download the application form, print it out, then mail it to:
