Frommer's Smart Deal of the Week: Amalfi Coast from $1,492

Italy is one destination where bookings are down, so it's no surprise we keep seeing lots of great deals pop up seemingly every day, such as this one to the Amalfi Coast.

Italy is one of those places where bookings are down, so it's no surprise we keep seeing lots of great deals pop up seemingly every day. Perillo Tours (tel. 800/431-1515; www.perillotours.com) has a special for the stunning Amalfi Coast, priced from $1,492 per person, based on double occupancy. You get round-trip airfare from New York-JFK, daily breakfast and four-course dinner nightly, a four-star hotel stay, access to a private beach, and hotel-airport transfers. The lowest advertised price reflects fall departures: September 4, 11, 18, and 25 but departures are possible roughly once a week throughout the summer, with prices peaking at $1,750 for July and August dates.

The Amalfi Coast, dotted with towns and villages and characterized by its sharply plunging cliffs, begins just south of Naples and extends to the island of Capri. The entire area is a UNESCO World Heritage site, but it's also known for its stellar liqueur limoncello, produced with Sorrento lemons. Day trips to Sorrento, the ruins of Pompeii, Ravello, and Positano are also possible. The independent trip spans five nights (seven days including travel) with accommodations at the recently renovated Villa Romana in Minori, a quiet residential town. The property has a swimming pool and is within walking distance to restaurants and the beach.
