Frommer's Smart Deal of the Week: Amazing Thailand From $1,300

This week's smart deal comes from SmarTours, which is offering early bookers a savings of $1,000 -- bringing the cost of a 14-day trip to Thailand with airfare to under $100 a day.

This week's smart deal comes from SmarTours (tel. 800/337-7773; www.smartours.com) and offers a trip to Thailand, starting from $1,199 for 14 days (additional taxes raise the price by about $100). The sale takes $1,000 off the price for a discount if you meet the early booking deadline of September 25.

The price reflects the October 6 and 13 departures, along with the April 13 and 20 departures for 2010, calculated based on flights out of Los Angeles (add $100 if you depart from New York City). The other fall departures (October 20, November 3 and 17) are not terribly expensive either -- priced at either $1,249 or $1,299. Airfare is included, along with the airline fuel surcharges, intra-Thailand flights and ground transportation, full American buffet breakfast daily, sightseeing tours as per itinerary, and the services of a professional, English-speaking tour director throughout. Accommodations are guaranteed at what the company describes as superior first class hotels.

You'll fly into and out of Bangkok and stay at the Century Park Hotel and will be greeted with a welcome dinner. While in the capital, you'll visit Buddhist temples and have two full days at your own pace to explore the city. Other destinations include the ancient capital, Ayutthaya to visit more ancient monuments and temples. This portion of the trip takes you through the countryside full of rice paddies along the way to northern Thailand. The final two destinations include Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, to experience Burmese crafts, elephant camps, and indigenous cultures in hillside villages.
