Italy is cheaper this year than last -- this is what I keep reading -- and Go-Today (tel. 800/227-3235; www.go-today.com) is offering a great deal on a trip to three Italian cities: Rome, Venice, and Florence. In order to take advantage of this low price, you must book by August 31 for travel November 1-December 10.
Why would you want to go to Italy? The question should be: Why wouldn't you? There's the architecture of Florence, the canals of Venice, the ancient monuments of Rome. And then there's the food, wine, cured meats, leather, olive oil, and more. The lowest advertised price is based on flights from Newark, NJ or New York-JFK, and puts you in modest, budget accommodations, such as the Taormina Hotel in Rome, the Palazzuolo in Florence, and the Pantalon in Venice. For about $100 more you can upgrade to tourist class hotels, and for about $150 more than that ($1,279) you can opt for standard accommodations. Regardless, you'll spend three nights in each city, travel by rail in between each destination, and receive continental breakfast daily. Airline fuel surcharges, along with hotel taxes and service charges, are included. Note: The lowest quoted price on Go-Today is $999, but mandatory airport taxes and fees add about $200 more to your total, however.
If you want to travel sooner, departures are available now, priced from $1,749, through March of 2010, priced from $1,099. The prices dip down to $999 for January 2010 travel and mid-February through early March 2010 travel, too. Other departure cities are possible for additional fees -- tack on $60 for Boston, $110 for Chicago, $150 for Atlanta, and $270 for Denver, Los Angeles, or Seattle.
