Frommer's Smart Deal of the Week: Puerto Vallarta for 3 Nights, Plus Airfare from $609

Looking for a quick getaway that won't break the bank? United's deal to Mexico's Pacific Coast takes you to beaches, cobblestone streets, and more than 200 restaurants for the lowest prices of the season.

Looking for a quick getaway that won't break the bank? Right now it's shoulder season in Mexico and the Caribbean, and United Vacations (tel. 888/328-6677; www.unitedvacations.com) has a special for select April travel dates. Starting from $479, the package includes round-trip airfare and three nights of accommodations at all-inclusive properties in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. You must book by April 19 in order to take advantage of this special, though. Prices include airline fuel surcharges up to $130. Puerto Vallarta, with its roots as a fishing village, manages to retain some of its character even as resorts and other luxury attractions sprout up around it. It's located on the Pacific Coast of Mexico and is full of cobblestone streets, stores, galleries, and more than 200 restaurants.

There are several different properties to choose from for this promotion and you can opt to stay for three, four, or seven nights. The lowest price reflects departures from Chicago and Denver during select dates in April for three nights at the mid-range Embarcadero Pacifico Hotels and Villas, which is close to Marina Vallarta Golf Course. (You can stay for four nights from $509 and seven nights from $669 at this property.) Opt for the Crown Paradise Club Puerto Vallarta, a four-star hotel where kids also stay for free, from $529 for both Chicago and Denver departures. That property is right on the beach and is five miles from the downtown and five minutes from the Marina. Or the Marival Resort and Suites located about fifteen miles north of Puerto Vallarta in Nuevo Vallarta, from $569 for either a Denver or Chicago departure. It's a beachfront property with a swim-up bar, tennis courts, spa and more. Finally, the Riu Palace Pacifico, a five-star all-inclusive resort, is available from $628 for three nights from Chicago or Denver. Other departure cities are possible, too, but the prices will go up.
